The entire Blue Jay fan section was on their feet, cheering loud, as the first time senior starter, Antonio Porter, made his first interception of the season during the September 1st game against the Emporia Spartans. The Blue Jays began the game with a six point leading streak. Later in the night, another interception was caught by Porter allowing the Blue Jays another needed turnover.

According to Porter, the Jays had a lot of good preparation for the game.

“Coach Z makes us watch films of other teams we play so we can understand their schemes and study them as a team,” Porter said.

Porter’s goal for the 2017 season is to average one interception per game. Many would agree that the #4 corner had a big reason to celebrate with his own win under those Friday night lights.

“I was feeling hype. It meant a lot because I am a first-time starter, and I tried to do what had to be done. Not everybody can get two interceptions in a game,” he said.

Porter had another motive driving him, as the Blue Jay coaches promised steak dinners to players who caught an interception.

“I’m hoping for two steak dinners now!” Porter said.

Coach Randall Zimmerman said Porters interceptions were “momentum changers.”

“Antonio proved he was willing to play with a team scheme on Friday night and I am very proud of him for that,” Zimmerman said. His longtime coach also voiced that Porter is a good leader and “always leads his team by example.”

Porter has confidence in his team and warns other not to sleep on them.

“I’m not going to tell the fans what to look forward to this season. Just know we are heavily underestimated, and just be ready.”

As the season continues Porter plans to continually make his presence known on the field.

“Be on the lookout. I plan on doing great things this season.”
